Experts call for EU urgent action over breast cancer

A leading breast cancer specialist hopes his latest report will be “turned into political, regulatory action” on chemicals. Professor Andreas Kortenkamp was presenting new evidence to the European Parliament this week. His findings indicated that one in every ten women in the EU will develop the disease. “Breast cancer is a multifactorial disease,” he said. “It has to do with the time a woman bears children, alcohol plays a role, radiation plays a role. But there is also a very strong case to consider the role of chemical exposures, and in particular exposure to cocktails of hormone-mimicking chemicals.” The head of the University of London’s Toxicology Centre, Kortenkamp said medical doctors agree that better screening alone cannot explain the rising incidence of breast cancer in both eastern and western Europe - except, recently, in France. Dr Annie Sasco, with Bordeaux University, said that might be due to stopping hormone replacement therapy: “It’s very recent. There seems to have been a slight reduction since 2005. Among those attributing this to less use of hormone substitutes after menopause may be counted the most respected authorities, such as the National Academy of Medicine.” In the past 20 years, breast cancer has increased alarmingly - in some places in Europe even doubling. Hormonally active chemicals can be found in drugs such as contraceptives, in plastics and in food.
