Colin heading off towards the Vandals’ try line with some trepidation. Moments later, a Vandals centre almost took his head off with a dangerously high tackle in the corner, just short of the try line.
We assumed that as a clear try had been prevented illegally that we’d get a penalty try. Interestingly though, the ref gave a straight try; from his point of view, Colin must have slid over the line with the ball grounded. The Vandals disputed that, saying he’d gone out of play first! What actually happened, I don’t know… the last frame I took had the players hitting the ground short of the line and from my angle there was no way to judge how near the sideline play was.
This incident was in the last few minutes and put Woking back into the lead. They held on to win 24-20 (we think), though as a friendly the result was not particularly important. As with the match against Esher last week, it was a bit like an "England under Sven" friendly, with most of the team being replaced at half-time - the second XV didn’t have a match so there was a squad of about 25 players for this match.
Speaking after the match, Colin said he couldn’t remember the incident but was otherwise okay.
